Curly Hair Care For Men: 5 Tips and Tricks from Professional Barbers

Even though curly hair looks great it can also come with its challenges. This hair type can be prone to frizz and requires a bit more TLC to ensure it's looking its best. At Youngmans we are frequently quizzed by our curly haired clients as they are looking for ways to keep their curls healthy and tamed. In this article, we have rounded up five tips and tricks from our professional team of barbers to help you keep your curls hydrated, nourished and frizz free…

How to wash your curls

If you want to keep your curls looking bouncy, head barber Craig highly recommends washing your hair two to three times a week using a clay-based shampoo as they have fantastic conditioning properties and act as a shampoo and conditioner in one. Your hair will feel clean and light but not stripped of natural oils. Clay shampoo also gives you a good curl definition and makes your hair strands softer to prevent them from tangling. It is great for removing product buildup, which can weigh down the curls. Another benefit is that it soothes the scalp and adds volume and shine to the hair.

How to style your curls

Our barber Eythan recommends applying a few sprays of the Hair Tonic to damp hair. Distribute the product evenly through your roots and ends. Then use a hair dryer on medium heat and a low setting to help prevent heat damage. With your free hand begin scrunching the hair and apply the heat from the hairdryer to the scrunched hair. Start from the back of your head and slowly move to the front. Now switch from medium heat to cool air on your hairdryer and repeat the process until the hair is completely dry. Once the desired curl and style have been achieved you can seal the look by taking a small amount of Natural Hair Cream and scrunching it into the hair to add extra definition and hold for your curls.

Keep your curls hydrated

Curly hair is more prone to dryness and frizz than any other hair type due to the structure of the hair strands which if not cared for properly can look and feel dry and brittle. It is essential to keep curls hydrated to ensure each hair strand remains soft, defined, and frizz and tangle free. Although this product has been designed for beard hair, 1932 owner Craig recommends adding a small amount of the Beard Moisturiser to the mid-lengths and ends of curly hair. This versatile product will help to lock moisture into the curls to define and enhance them. An added benefit is that this product contains hemp oils which promote hair growth.

Define your curls

There are many things that can result in your curls losing definition, lack of hydration and heat damage can be two of the most common causes.  There are a number of things you can do to avoid these two problems from occurring such as using a lower heat setting when using styling tools and ensuring you are regularly conditioning your curls. There are also products that can help to create more definition such as Sea Salt Spray. Head barber Craig recommends spritzing a few sprays of the Sea Salt Spray to the hair to enhance natural curls and waves. This water based product helps to thicken hair and prevent kinks.

Add volume to the root

If your curls are weighed down with product it can result in the hair looking flat, particularly at the root. 1932 founder Craig recommends tackling this challenge by applying Casual Clay to the roots when hair is dry, starting from the back of the head and working your way to the front. This water based product will give your roots that much needed lift while resulting in a natural finish.
