5 Tips For Caring For Your Shaved Head By Professional Barbers

While many people understand the basics of how to care for their hair a lot of people can get confused when it comes to the best practices for caring for a bald head. When your scalp is exposed to the elements it is vital that you know how to protect it to ensure it remains healthy and hydrated. In this blog post, our team of professional barbers put together their top 5 tips for caring for your shaved head…

  • Shave the right way

  • It is important to shave your head the right way to prevent inflammation or damage. To start apply a Shaving Cream to your head. Add a fingertip's worth of Shave Cream to a bowl and lather with a damp shaving brush (not dripping wet). Massage gently in a firm circular motion onto your scalp. Use warm water to create your lather as it helps to open up the pores to give a smoother shave. When it comes to choosing your razor, we recommend opting for a safety razor to achieve a cleaner shave with less irritation. Our brand new stainless steel safety razors are plastic-free as every year over 2 billion plastic razors are thrown out with almost all ending in landfill as their mixture of materials make them difficult to recycle. Now it’s time to start shaving, hold the razor at a 30 degree angle to the skin. Do not apply pressure - hold the handle gently and let the weight of the razor head glide over your skin. Shave in the direction of hair growth. When you’ve finished shaving splash some cold water over your head, this will help to smooth and close the pores. Apply some soothing Post Shave Balm to the shaved area as it helps to nourish irritated skin. Our balm contains Beeswax, Cocoa Butter, Calendula infused Sunflower Oil and Meadowfoam Seed Oil to deeply moisturise the skin.

  • Keep hydrated

  • Many different factors can cause your bald head to become dry such as overexposure to the sun or shaving frequently. Not only can this dryness lead to discomfort it can also result in dandruff, which is effectively just dry skin particles flaking away. To combat a dry scalp we recommend regularly applying our natural and vegan Moisture Cream which is made with shea butter and cocoa butter to allow your skin to retain moisture and provide immediate relief from dry skin. It also contains aloe vera to promote blood circulation and repair skin damage. We recommend using it once or twice daily by massaging the cream gently into the scalp avoiding any areas that have broken skin.

  • Don’t skip the shampoo

  • You may be wondering what is the point in washing your hair if you actually don’t have any on your head. With or without hair your head produces oil and sweat which if left untreated can build up, clog pores and make your scalp look shiny. Our solid hair shampoo is made with saponified olive oil, coconut oil and French green clay. These key ingredients will help your scalp stay hydrated and healthy and will cleanse excess oils without stripping any of the head's natural oils. We recommend washing your bald head a few times a week, however, if you are prone to excess oil you can increase that frequency to daily.

  • Apply SPF

  • While rocking a sun tan for summer may seem appealing the damaging effects of the sun (especially on a bald head) just aren’t worth it. Sunscreen helps to reduce your risk of skin cancer, protects against sunburn and prevents blotchy skin to name just a few benefits. Bald heads can burn fast especially if freshly shaved. We recommend using a SPF 30 or higher and if you want to avoid the white cast that can be caused by some thicker sunscreens you could instead opt for one that is designed to be applied to the face, as these are often a lighter consistency and are formulated for sensitive skin.

  • Exfoliate your scalp

  • There are so many benefits to regularly exfoliating your bald head. Firstly, it helps to prevent any dry patches from forming, it also combats ingrown hairs and can help to hydrate and moisturise your head, as well as balance excess oil. We recommend using our natural and vegan Face Scrub. This hero product is created with natural oats to exfoliate and coconut oil to cleanse and moisturise. We recommend exfoliating your bald head once a week. This bar naturally melts at body temperature, so apply by massaging the bar into your scalp avoiding any broken skin. Rinse the product off with warm water and finish with our Natural Moisture Cream.
